can anyone explain in very simple terms what zen is all about? Are zen and buddhism the same thing?

What are the main differences in the seperate traditions of Buddhism, ie Theravadin, Mahayana, Tibeten, etc. Is Zen a completely different religion, or is it also a type of tradition? All I know is it’s mostly practiced in Japan.

Does it make you think they’re trying too hard? They were members of Shinto/Zen/Hinduism/Buddhism before, and bam, 2 months after immigration they’re some sect of christianity or the other.
Are we really a culture melting pot? Or are we pressuring these people to change?

For example Zen, Tibetan, Theravada, etc. Which one have you found to be the best for you in your spiritual journey? I’m a 16 year old and I want to be a Buddhist, but I’m not sure which one yet. I’m leaning towards Tibetan.

I recently switched from being a devout Christian of over 15 years to Zen Buddhism. What do Christians, atheists and everyone else think of Buddhism?

Materialistically speaking?
If so, what kind of implications would this type of philosophy have on poor populations in Asia (i.e. farmers)?
Also, did you know that Zen Buddhism influenced extremely brutal and suicidal Samurai ethics?
(I just noticed that nearly everybody here is focus on criticizing Christianity and Islam (sometimes). All the other religions get a free ride. I jus twant to add something new to the mix.)

Why do Zen Buddhists shave their heads? Why do Tibetan Buddhists have crew cuts? Why do all of them shave their faces? I have sometimes seen Chan monks, in movies, with facial hair. Can they have facial hair in real life?

I remember seeing a document that explained that there were 9 or 10 “worlds” that your spirit can be living in… like “heaven” “hell” “bodhisatva” etc…
Do you know the others? Also, what kind of Buddhism is this that I’m referring to? Is it the same in Zen Buddhism?

Like Zen is just a rip off of Taoism and Tibetan Buddhism mixes in the old Tibetan religion. So is it accurate that Theravada is the most correct?

Funnily enough, 3 or 4 billion people don’t believe that God is a blood-thirsty vengeful monster demanding blood sacrifices. Some of them believe that we can all achieve heaven NOW, not in the ‘hereafter’ (what a cop out) by acting and thinking divinely, not praying to idols(and I include a book as an idol, as well as images such as the iconic figure of Jesus – (ginger hair and beard …sandals, right? well -you’re worshipping an idol, a graven image which you have constructed in your mind, I’m sorry). Most of humanity find John3:16 to be a completely insane notion, and they also consider that we are ALL sons and daughters of God, and that any other conception simply leads to madness cruelty and fanaticism. Well, there you go. Hell is gonna be REAL crowded, according to the Pauline Christians who have it all so very very sadly wrong.
